Tyler & Marky is an American animated children's television series originally created by Erica Miller for Walt Disney Television Animation. It centers on a clever and smart teenage boy named Tyler Bridges, his imaginary friend Marky Tops and his friends Grady Williams and Lauren Johnson, living in the fictional town of Lake Hills. They try to live in a normal everyday life to occasionally prevent attacks from a wicked mastermind named Hacker and his henchmen who want to capture Marky, so the gang must team up to stop Master Hacker' plans.

Erica Miller created the title character for an unpublished comic book series in the early 1980s, and later reluctantly produced the animated short "An Clever Surprise" and later reluctantly pitched the series to Disney as a weekday afternoon cartoon in 1989 after the success of DuckTales. The studio gave the staff a large amount of creative freedom, with the writers targeting both children and adults.

The series originally premiered as a preview episode on The Disney Channel on March 16, 1991, then it later premiered on national syndication as a part of the Disney Afternoon lineup, which led to a series of half-hour episodes, and was later moved to ABC's Saturday morning lineup on September 6, 1996, then returning to Disney Channel on September 18, 1999.

Tyler & Marky received wide critical acclaim throughout its first eight or nine seasons, which are generally considered its "Golden Age". It gained over 25 awards during its original run, including 5 Daytime Emmy Awards, 7 Kids' Choice Awards, with Time calling it "the best and funniest animated phenomenon of the 90s decade" and has been largely commercially successful; it has spawned a successful franchise and adaptations into other media, such as comics, toys, and video games. The series originally ended on March 29, 2002, with a total of 11 seasons, tying Tyler & Marky as the second longest-running American animated television series, behind The Simpsons at that time. As a result of the show's popularity, a feature-length film, titled The Tyler & Marky Movie, was released into theaters on April 26, 2002, a month after the series finale.

On December 9, 2011, Walt Disney Animation Studios released a computer-animated reboot film under the same name as a new incarnation of the original series; it was followed by two sequels, Tyler & Marky 2 in 2015 and Tyler & Marky: Magical Mayhem in 2021, respectively.

In November 2019, following years of rumors and speculation, Disney+ announced that it had picked up the original series for 17 new half-hour episodes that began airing on August 13, 2021 to celebrate the 30th anniversary, with a total of TBD episodes aired so far. The series has been renewed for a thirteenth season, which premiered on November 12, 2021 and concluded on March 2, 2022. The series has been renewed for a fourteenth season, which premiered on October 5, 2022 on Disney Channel.

He has three dim-witted yet supporting henchmen: Stuart, a wise-cracking cat and Hacker's second-in-command and assistant; Buff, a large, hefty man; and Jerry, a former human turned into a random freak. Many of the villains' plans all fail thanks to them being stopped by Tyler, Marky and their friends.

The show includes an array of quirky supporting characters, which include Tyler's lovely neighbor Fernanda Flowson, his miserable neighbor Marvin Bumper, Marky's friends Avery Hawk, an cool but stubborn hawk, and Check Dog, a anthropomorphic dog who tried to look the other way.

Setting[]

Main article: Lake Hills

The primary setting of Tyler & Marky is Lake Hills, a fictional city in the state of California that was founded on May 25, 1894 by William T. Lakehills. According to Erica Miller, the town is more loosely based on Nevada City, California, the city where she grew up.

Production[]

Development[]

The idea for Tyler & Marky originated in the early 1980s, when Erica Miller, while at college, created a series of comic books titled Me & My Imagination that starred various characters, many of which would evolve into Tyler & Marky characters, especially the titular protagonist. Miller tried selling the comic book so it can be professionally published, but none of the companies she sent it to were interested. After graduating from college to work as a Disney animator, her work laid untouched in her attic for a few years. In August 1988, Miller revisited her idea and wanted to adapt her comic series to television. After several unsuccessful attempts between CBS, Fox, and Nickelodeon, Miller ultimately chose to pitch the series to The Walt Disney Company after the huge success of DuckTales. She presented an animated short film "An Clever Surprise" to Michael Eisner, who afterward became so impressed with the short that he encouraged Miller to adapt it into a full-length weekday afternoon cartoon.

Animation[]

While the animation for the entire original series was produced by Disney Animation Australia, the series' first season was produced by Kennedy Cartoons. However, due to difficulties with the animation studio, production was switched from Kennedy Cartoons to Wang Film Productions, who had co-animated the entire series alongside Disney Animation Australia during its original run until 2002.

Following its revival in 2019, the series' production has been now handled domestically at both Snipple Animation Studios in Quezon City, Philippines and Disney Television Animation in Glendale, California. The finished animation has been created overseas at Saerom Animation in South Korea. As with most current Disney animated series, Snipple handles character, prop and background design, while Disney handles the storyboards. These in turn become animatics to be screened for the writers at Classic Ink Productions for any changes to be made before the work is shipped overseas. The overseas studios then draw the inbetweens, ink and paint, and render the animation to tape. Episodes are finished at Disney, where they are edited and have music added before it is delivered to Disney+ three to four months later.

For the first seven seasons, the series used cel animation. Beginning with season 8, production switched to digital ink and paint.

Original cancellation[]

Miller stated in August 2001 that if the then-upcoming second Tyler & Marky film were successful, she hoped to produce more episodes of Tyler & Marky throughout the years. However, The Tyler & Marky Movie was a box office flop (despite the cult following it gained on home video releases), resulting in plans for further episodes being scrapped or even on hold. Despite this, reruns of the series soon began airing on Disney Channel shortly after due to its ongoing popularity. As a result, the series' merchandise also continued after its cancellation.

Revival[]

On November 21, 2019, after years of rumors, speculation and outcry, it was officially announced that Disney+ had picked up the show for 21 new half-hour episodes that would begin premiered in early 2021, following the major success of the computer-animated reboot films. The original writing crew would return, joined by new writers for the revival. It was originally announced that original main voice actors Derryberry, Paulsen, MacNeille, Daily, Soucie and Cummings would return as well, but on December 20, 2019, it was announced that a casting notice was posted to replace the entire cast when Disney would not meet their salary demands. The situation was later resolved, and the entire original voice-cast returned for the new episodes. Near the end of a message from Rob Paulsen sent to members of the "Save the Classic Tyler & Marky Voices" group on Facebook, Paulsen announced that the original cast would be returning for the new episodes. Similarly, an email sent to fans from Miller reported that Derryberry, Paulsen, MacNeille, Daily, Soucie and Cummings would all be returning for the revival.

Miller hinted in early April 2018 that the series would have new humor that "will blow everyone's mind by taking the whole series to a new direction", indicating it would also incorporate parodies of and references to pop culture, similar in vein to the CGI reboot films. According to reports, the Tyler & Marky revival is described as a "kid-friendly Family Guy and South Park".
