Production[]
Development[]
Phil Nibbelink came up with the concept for Toy Knight in 1990 during the production of 1991's An American Tail: Fievel Goes West. Upon pitching the project to Steven Spielberg, the founder of Amblin Entertainment, Spielberg recalled Nibbelink saying "it fits perfect for an animated feature,". In November 1991, The Morning Call reported that Steven Spielberg was working on "a animated original story". The film, originally envisioned as a traditionally animated movie with an action-oriented comedy-drama tone, was intended to be developed by Spielberg's animation studio Amblimation.
In 1992, Warner Bros. president Terry Semel approached Spielberg with the proposition of having the film be co-produced with its feature animation division, which Spielberg realized was "basically a no-brainer," according to him. However, due to "creative differences ", as well as the box office failures of two animated features, Thumbelina and A Troll in Central Park, development for Toy Knight was stalled in December 1994 when Spielberg felt that the studio need more times working on Balto, The Witch Stone and Natalia's Story and sometimes worried about Warner Bros.' lack of advertising and their failed marketing campaign will make the film fails at the box office.
