Sonny 2 is a 2015 American computer-animated fantasy adventure-comedy film produced by the Warner Animation Group, Village Roadshow Pictures and RatPac-Dune Entertainment, and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. It was directed by Lacey Robinson and Kate Petersen, from a screenplay by Rob Letterman, Nicholas Stoller, Glenn Ficarra, John Requa and John August and a story by Stoller and series creator Ryan Coleman. Elijah Wood, Mandy Moore, Ryan Reynolds, Sarah Silverman and Maya Rudolph reprised their roles respectively. New cast members include Tom Holland, Margot Rubin, Sofía Vergara, Emily Blunt, Zac Efron, Ben Schwartz and Keegan-Michael Key.
The film takes place after the events of the first film and follows Sonny Terrell as he, alongside Celeste and Raul, stumble across the magical portal that teleport them into the world of Naetitopia. After being separated, Sonny and Raul team up with Susan and Livia as they need to save Celeste while trying to stop Queen Ruby, alongside his new rival, Everett Ashton, from using the Powerful Crystal in order to take over the world.
Sonny 2 premiered in Los Angeles on February 8, 2015, and was theatrically released in the United States on February 20 in RealD 3D, IMAX, and conventional formats. The film received positive reviews, with many considering it an improvement over its predecessor and commending its humour, character development, screenplay, soundtrack, animation, and the voice cast, although some criticism was on the film being derivative to the original film as well as the plot. A sequel, titled Sonny: The New Journey, was released in theaters on January 10, 2020.
Plot[]
Roughly two years after defeating Professor Nitpick and Chief Rooker, Sonny attempts to help the public as a vigilante hero with little success, as well with the help of Raul. Kendra advises her son to remain patient for the day his moment will be needed. After a hard day at work and their mother left for the nightshift, Sonny and Celeste tried to spend a perfect time alone in the house, but they are later attacked by Leland, who has escaped the strange planet with the help of a another teenager Everett Ashton. To honor his long-lost family, Everett demands the location of the last of the legendary Powerful Crystals, an all-powerful substance that gives the user superpowers.
Raul tried to save Sonny and Celeste, but stopped by Everett before he gets hit by a car. The trio were rescued by Livia McFlight, an friendly teenager who came from the Kingdom of Naetitopia and comes to warn him about Everett. After falling into the cliff, Livia uses the teleported crystal and the group got sucked into the portal, where Sonny, Celeste and Raul are separated. Sonny and Livia lands in the Kingdom of Naetitopia, while Celeste lands in the treacherous Darkworld, ruled by the evil queen Regina Sellers, known as Queen Ruby. Upon arrival the Kingdom of Naetitopia, Sonny and Livia meet Flappy, who leads them to the palace of the kingdom's ruler: Queen Leslie. Leslie need someone to forge an alliance with the formidable Zoom Kingdom in order to help repel Queen Ruby. Leslie's fun-loving daughter Princess Susan wanted to volunteer for this plan, but Leslie tell her that the journey ahead is too perilous for her to undertake. Meanwhile, Ruby seeks to destroy the Kingdom of Naetitopia with five of the Powerful Crystals if she need find one more, while she and her son Leland scheming to steal the last two crystal, offers to help Everett.
Meanwhile, back in Naetitopia, Leslie and Susan meets Sonny. Sonny convinces Leslie and Susan to help him find the last of the legendary Powerful Crystals and save Celeste. Persuaded by Sonny to stop Queen Ruby, Leslie consents on one condition: Sonny must first complete an rigorous training course in order to volunteer on the quest. At first, Sonny fails multiple times at the course, and just as he nears completion, an unexpected obstacle snags his progress. Nevertheless, Leslie still agrees to let Sonny, Susan and Livia (as well as Flappy) to start their journey on their own, with Raul (also land in the Kingdom of Naetitopia) joining the group and reunited with Sonny. Back in Darklands, Ruby then imprisons Celeste to threaten Sonny, after revealing that her brother know about the Powerful Crystal. As the group journeyed towards the Zoom Kingdom, they come across a Darker General and Ruby's army as they finally grabbed the sixth Powerful Crystal. As the group and Ruby's army battled each other, Sonny had to fight Darker General for the sixth crystal, but lucky he ultimately defeat him. As the Darker General tried to take Sonny down, Raul and Flappy knock him far away while Ruby's army retreat. While they rested for tonight, Susan tells Sonny that she ended up in Naetitopia as a little girl, where she raised by Leslie and become the princess of Naetitopia, but she can also see herself as her adopted daughter.
Arriving at the Zoom Kingdom, Sonny and Raul reunited with Gavyn, who is now the aide of King Masher. Masher agrees to forge an alliance with the Kingdom of Naetitopia if Sonny defeats his formidable son, Ruben, in a fight. Despite Ruben's immense strength, Sonny successfully defeats him using a DashSuit, winning not only the battle but also securing a powerful alliance for both kingdoms. Sonny, Raul, Susan, Livia, Flappy and the creatures of Zoom Kingdom use go-karts to race to the mysterious cave, where they they find a compass within a temple. Queen Ruby and Everett track them, leading the group escape and race back to the Kingdom of Naetitopia, but as they approached a dangerous curve in the road, they were suddenly ambushed by the Darkers. When a Darker General selflessly executes a kamikaze strike to destroy a vital part of the road, Sonny and Ruben plummet to the ocean as Gavyn and the other creatures are captured, intended to be tortured. Leland and Everett steal the compass, though Everett begins to question Ruby's sense of loyalty and honor when she mocks Sonny for choosing to save Susan and Livia.
Susan, Livia, Flappy and Raul return to the Kingdom of Naetitopia and warns their fellow citizens of the impending danger, urging them to evacuate immediately. Knowing Sonny is still alive, Raul decides to look for him and face Ruby, Leland and Everett and goes to the temple, while Susan must avenge Sonny's defeat. Sonny and Ruben actually lands in the same island where Leland and Everett finds the temple, where Sonny fights with Everett to keep him from taking the last Powerful Crystal. Seeing this as an opportunity, Leland uses the distraction to seize and fuse himself with the crystals, which explodes and sinks the temple into the water. With no use left for Everett, Leland betrays him and leaves him, along with Sonny and Ruben, behind for dead. Working together, Sonny, Ruben and Everett are able to escape just as Raul rescues them in his own mini spaceship.
Back in the Kingdom of Naetitopia, after Susan preparing herself for the battle, Leslie knew that Ruby and the rest of her minions were approaching fast aboard their flying ship. Ruby's monstrous and darkness minions launch a ruthless invasion, seizing the majority of the kingdom's citizens, including Livia and Flappy. Meanwhile, amidst the chaos, Leland finally arrives proposes to Susan, who reluctantly accepts after Ruby trapped Leslie, which both of them known each other since a long time.
At Susan and Leland's wedding, festivities, Ruby intends to execute all of her prisoners in molten lava. Susan, however, remember what Leslie said and use a IceBlock to freeze Leland, rallying the remaining citizens of Naetitopia to fight off the rest of Ruby's minions. When Ruby about to finish off Leslie, Susan also freeze her as well. As Sonny, Raul, Everett and Ruben arrive and free the prisoners, and Sonny uses a Flying Squirrel Suit to rescue Celeste. An enraged Ruby frees herself and summons a nuclear missile to destroy the Kingdom of Naetitopia out-of-anger, but Sonny and Raul knocks it off-course and directs it into the portal where it detonates, creating a powerful shockwave that causes everyone and elements of the Kingdom of Naetitopia to be transported back to Midview. Ruby uses the Powerful Crystals to turn herself into a giant darkness monster like herself. Sonny, Celeste, and Raul, alongside their old and new friends (Jay, Danica, Gavyn, Everett, Leslie, Susan, Livia, Flappy and Ruben), work together to fight Ruby and all of her minions and to reclaim the Powerful Crystals. As they fight Ruby, she wounds Leslie in a final confrontation, sparking a fierce determination in Sonny. He grabs the Powerful Crystals, gaining invincibility, and finally defeating Queen Ruby and all of her minions. With victory secured, Sonny disperses the Powerful Crystals and reverts to his normal form.
In the aftermath, Ruby is presumed dead while Susan shrinks Leland with a Minigrape and Leslie imprisons him. Sonny is hailed as a hero and praised by Midview's populace, including Kendra and his close friends. Following these events, Sonny and Celeste, along with Kendra and Raul, begin a fresh chapter of their lives by relocating to a new home in the Kingdom of Naetitopia where they embrace their newfound idyllic life.

Sonny 2 was originally scheduled for release on April 10, 2015, then pushed up to March 6, before moving a week up to February 20. The film premiered on February 8, 2015 at the Regency Village Theater in Los Angeles, California. Sonny 2 was digitally remastered into IMAX 3D format and released in select international IMAX theatres. This film was also shown in the 4DX format, featuring tilting seats, water sprays, strobe lightning, aroma, wind, pops, and ticklers, in selected countries. A short film, Sonny's New Job, that promoted the sequel was shown in front of theatrical screenings of The Lego Movie back in February 2014.
The film was shown alongside Flash in the Pain, a short film directed by Matthew O'Callaghan based on the Looney Tunes franchise.
Marketing[]
An exclusive 35-second teaser trailer was released via Warner Bros. Pictures' YouTube channel and was exclusively attached to theatrical screenings of The Lego Movie on February 7, 2014. Another teaser trailer was released via Warner Bros. Pictures' YouTube channel on May 21. 2014, and debuted before Puffy two days later. This was followed by a full trailer on September 16, 2014. The final trailer was released on December 18, 2015. Throughout the year, trailers and 20-second motion posters of the movie were shown. TV spots began to air between January and February of 2015.
Several merchandise were made for Sonny 2, such as toys and figurines. Warner partnered the film with licensing and promotional partners valued at $70 million for the marketing campaign. One of the partners included McDonald's, which released a promotion for a toy set offered in their Happy Meals for the film between February and March 2015. Additional marketing partners for the film included General Mills, Lego, Kraft Foods, Ad Council, and American Express.

Sonny 2 was released on Digital HD on May 26, 2015, and on DVD and Blu-ray (2D and 3D) on June 9, 2015, by Warner Home Video. In addition to Flash in the Pain and Sonny's New Job, all releases include three short films titled Susan Outs and Magic & Mayhem. The DVD and Blu-ray combo pack also comes with a Sonny and Susan plush toys. The film topped the home video sales chart for two consecutive weeks. As of March 2017, 8.5 million home entertainment units were sold worldwide.
