Sidequest: The Lost World is a 2020 American computer-animated comedy-drama fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It is the long-awaited sequel to the 2001 film Sidequest. Directed by Aracely Valencia from a screenplay by Valenica herself, Don Hall, Jennifer Lee and Jared Bush and a story by Valenica, Hall and Chris Williams, and produced by Clark Spencer, the film stars Elijah Wood, Isla Fisher, Jerome Ranft, Idris Elba, Mr. T, Paul Rudd, Scarlett Johannson and Alyssa Milano. Set three years after the events of the first film, the film follows Marlee as she discovers a lost world hidden and she and Quinton are about to explore. However, when they discover that someone want to get it of the lost world, it's up to Marlee and Quinton to save it.
Unlike the first film, which it was animated by The Secret Lab, The Lost World is animated in-house at Walt Disney Animation Studios' main headquarters in Burbank, California, just like most Disney computer-animated films.
Sidequest: The Lost World premiered at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles on March 1, 2020, and was scheduled to be theatrically released on April 24. However, the feature was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Sidequest: The Lost World was released direct-to-streaming on Disney+ on June 19, 2020 and received generally positive reviews from critics. It was released in theaters in the United States on October 20, 2023. At the 92nd Academy Awards, the film was nominated for Best Animated Feature, but lost to Soul. A sequel is currently in development

Development[]
After the success of Sidequest in March 2001, Disneytoon Studios originally planned to make a direct-to-video sequel to the first film. It was set to be directed by Steve Loter, the director of Tarzan & Jane (2002). It was scheduled to be released in 2005 but was delayed for many years. Soon after 2006, when John Lasseter became Walt Disney Animation Studios' new chief creative officer, he called for all sequels and future sequels that Disneytoon had planned to be cancelled.

The characters from the first film were recreated using new CGI models by Walt Disney Animation Studios. This was due to the closure of The Secret Lab in 2001 and the original models not being animated for over a decade, as well as updates made to animation technology since the original film's release, with rigging and rendering being reworked so they could be used with modern technology.
