Sidequest is a 2001 American computer-animated comedy-drama fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and The Secret Lab, and released by Walt Disney Pictures. The 44th Disney animated feature film, it was directed by Aracely Valencia from a screenplay by Joe Ranft and Valencia and a story by Valencia, Hall, Williams, Bob Tzudiker and Noni White. The film follows two unlikely warriors who encounter each other while going on their own quest. As they learns their difference, they tried to save their home from a dangerous threat.
Development began in 1990, when the film was originally conceived as a traditional animated musical epic. Former Walt Disney Studios chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg recruited Destiny Sparks directors Cynthia and Valeria Rivera to design the film's characters, especially the titular duo who originated in drawings Cynthia created during her college years. Because of poor test screenings, the departure of Katzenberg, and production falling behind schedule, Disney cancelled the project in favor of other films during that time. However, Disney later revive the idea at 1996. Although it was intended to remain its initial traditional animation look, the film eventually became a fully computer animated feature by The Secret Lab. Pre-production began in 1998, with Hall selected as director and Williams joining him the following year, replacing TBD as the original director as he left the project after disagreeing with the decision to turn the film into computer animation. It is Disney's first fully computer-animated feature film, as Dinosaur (2000) was a combination of live-action and computer animation which in turn was also provided by The Secret Lab.
Sidequest was released on March 16, 2001, in the United States. It received positive reviews from critics and grossed $221.5 million over a $38 million budget. It was nominated for the first Best Animated Feature at the 75th Academy Awards, and, through home video releases and television syndication, gathered a cult following. A long-awaited sequel, titled Sidequest: The Lost World, was released on Disney+ on September 25, 2020. A third film is currently in development.
